If you want low energy prices and a secure power supply, you need to speed up the expansion of renewables now and make the grids fit for the future.
Speaker Session
Gunar Hering, Chairman of the Management Board of ENERTRAG SE, was born in Chemnitz on February 7, 1972. After graduating from high school, he studied physics at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena and at the State University of New York, Stony Brook. After graduation, he worked as a research assistant at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt and received his PhD in experimental nuclear physics from the Technical University of Darmstadt. As part of his doctorate, he investigated in an experiment at CERN in Geneva how the mass of elementary particles changes in an extremely hot and dense state – comparable to the state shortly after the Big Bang. In doing so, he contributed to a better understanding of the mechanism by which elementary particles acquire their mass.
He then spent 12 years with top global management consulting firm The Boston Consulting Group, where he played a key role in shaping and building the renewable energy business as a member of the global energy leadership team. As an expert, he gained extensive experience advising energy companies and manufacturers as well as governments both in Germany and internationally.
In 2014, Gunar Hering joined ENERTRAG as a member of the Management Board to play an even more direct role in implementing the energy transition. As Chief Financial Officer, he was initially responsible for the areas of finance and international projects; from 2021, as Chief Operating Officer (COO), he was responsible for projects, service, human resources and legal affairs. In 2022, he was finally appointed CEO of ENERTRAG as the direct successor to the company’s founder, Jörg Müller. Under his responsibility, the core business in Germany and France more than doubled. He also developed ENERTRAG into an integrated renewable energy platform and drove international expansion. He was named Energy Manager of the Year 2022 by E&M magazine.
Personally, Gunar Hering is driven by the vision of a planet worth living on and protecting for all people. He wants to leave an intact earth to his four children and future generations and has dedicated his work to the energy transition and compliance with the Paris climate targets for more than 20 years.
